The holiday season generally means getting together with family, and friends to celebrate. While these can be fun times, they can also bring on unwanted stresses. Being around so many people with various views, etc. can cause gender dysphoria in many trans women.

We always recommend a therapist when it comes to gender dysphoria. Having someone that is well versed in coping mechanisms, and knowledge can be vital in a successful transition. If you are unable to speak with a therapist, here are a few tips and tricks to help you deal with dysphoria when around family during the holidays.

Tip #1 - Have a Private and Safe Space to Escape To

When you are out of your comfort zone and at a family members residence, try to have a designated place you can go to escape. Some places might be the garage, a bedroom, outside, or even the bathroom. Go your your safe space whenever you feel the need to breath, relax, and calm your nerves.

Tip #2 - Enforce Your Boundaries

Don't be afraid to tell someone that you just need a moment to yourself, before going to your safe space. It's perfectly fine to say, "I'm going to go get a bit of fresh air," or "I just need a minute to myself, I'll be back shortly."

Tip #3 - Have a Friend Send Positive Affirmations

If you have a good friend that supports you, and understands that you suffer from dysphoria at times, ask them to send you positive text messages. These messages can be as simple as "You're beautiful" or "Remember to smile!". The messages don't have to be long at all.

Tip #4 - Correct Family Politely When Misgendered

Getting misgendered is a serious contributor to feeling dysphoric over the holidays, or around family. If you have already told everyone your correct pronouns, and they continue to misgender you, there is a solution. The solution is be polite, and kind when correcting them. If they see that you don't get angry, they will be more inclined to call you by your CORRECT gender. The reason being is that humans aren't receptive to anger, as much as they are to kindness.
