How to Choose a Name as a Transgender Woman | MtF Transition Tips

One of the most important, yet difficult steps in transitioning is choosing a female name. Don't worry though, we've set out to make it easy as possible, and have come up with a simple process to help you choose a good MtF name that you love, and will cherish being able to call your own.

There is no right or wrong way to choose your female name, however, we've found that having a systematic approach works best for most individuals that are transitioning.

Step 1. List potential female name choices

The first step that we recommend is to identify a list of ten beautiful names that have always intrigued you, inspired you, or sound pleasant when you hear them out loud. Try to identify a minimum of five names.

Don't rush this process, as you will want to end up with a name that suits you and is pleasant to hear.

Friends

Step 2. Narrow your name choices

Once you have selected a handful of names that are intriguing to you, write each name, in large print, on individual pieces of paper. Lay each piece of paper out on a table, and say them each out loud until you have identified two or three that resonate with you most. Shred and recycle the names that don't resonate.

Sometimes you will know right away which female name suits you best, other times you will want to go on to step 3.

Step 3. Continue to Narrow your name choices

Tape the pieces of paper with your favorite names, to your bathroom mirror, and say each name out loud, once in the morning, and then once at night. Do this for four days straight.

Step 4. Finalizing which female name is best for you

On day five, one of the names will feel like it was meant to be yours, and this is the name you should use to be your very own. Choose a name that makes you feel the most feminine, confident, and beautiful inside.

Step 5. Celebrate your new beginning

Congratulations! You have gotten through one of the most essential stages in male-to-female transitioning. You should feel proud of your accomplishment. Smile, and treat yourself to a cute outfit, makeup, or a night out. You deserve it!
