Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is an essential part of gender transition for many MTF (Male-to-Female) transgender women. One of the changes that many MTF trans women may experience during HRT is a change in their skin texture and appearance. Everyone's body is different, however here are a few of the common skin changes that you might expect while on HRT:

1. Softer, and much smoother skin

Estrogen, which is the primary hormone used in MTF HRT, often times reduces the natural production of sebum on the skin. Sebum is an oily substance that biological men produce.  Without this production of sebum, you might notice smoother, and less oily skin. Estrogen can also increase the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that help to keep your skin supple, healthy, and elastic. The production of these can lead to a softer and more youthful appearance.

2. Thinner, more delicate skin

As estrogen levels increase in the body, your skin may become thinner and more delicate to the touch. This can lead to increased sensitivity to sunlight and other environmental factors, so it's important to take care to protect your skin with UV sunscreen and other protective measures.

3. Reduced body and facial hair

Tired of all of that body hair? HRT has been known to help to reduce the growth of body hair, making it easier to achieve a more feminine smooth, and hairless appearance. It's important to note that while HRT can help with a reduction of body hair, alone it may not be enough to completely eliminate body hair, and additional hair removal methods may still be necessary.

4. Changes in skin pigmentation

Some MTF trans women have been known to notice slight changes in their skin pigmentation/coloration during HRT. For example, estrogen can cause the skin to appear slightly lighter or more pink-toned, particularly in areas such as the lips and nipples.

Will HRT Change My Skin?

It's important to keep in mind that everyone's experience with HRT is unique, and not all MTF trans women will experience the same skin changes. It all depends on diet, dosage, and genetics. Additionally, HRT can take some time to take effect, so it's important to be patient and stick to your treatment plan as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

With time and proper care however, many MTF trans women can enjoy a softer, smoother, and more feminine-looking complexion as a result of HRT.
