Coming out to your family as a transgender women can be a scary, and tumultuous time. If your family is open minded, it might be an easier process, however if they are closed minded, it can be a challenge to open up to them freely. A lot of parents, grandparents and extended relatives grew up in different times and have set views.

Gathering the strength in finding the way to tell your family you're trans takes a lot of courage. We've put together a few tips on how to make the process a little bit easier on you.

Tip #1 - Get the Guidance of a Therapist

If you have a therapist that you trust, ask them techniques and ways you can come out to your family. If they are LGBTQIA+ friendly, they will have discussed this issue many times and have some great tips in helping you tell your family successfully.

Tip #2 - Be respectful, Polite and Understanding

Be respectful, polite, and understanding. Showing respect, can go a long way when expressing your feelings to your family. Understanding that they might not agree with you on your decision, and showing that you're cognizant of their feelings, can help them to feel more at ease about you being trans.

Tip #3 - Express your True Feelings

If you are coming out to your family for the first time, it is important to let them how how being trans makes you feel. Express the happiness that you experience as a transwoman. Let them get a glimpse into why it is a positive, and is something that you feel makes you a better person - your real self. If you have been MtF for some time, let them know how happy, alive, and whole, that it makes you feel.

Tip #4 - Be prepared for pushback

Most of the time parents, and other family members will not be open to you coming out as the true person that you are as a transwoman. They will say things like "It's just a phase", or "You'll grow out of it". You have to know within yourself who you truly are. It might take time to win your parents and family over to the idea that you're true nature is being a transwoman, but nothing good happens without at least some struggle.

Tip #5 - Be Yourself

Having the courage to be yourself, no matter what others think of you is crucial to living a fulfilled life. Whether others such as parents, relatives, or friends don't accept your decision, that is their choice. As long as you're not hurting anyone, you should be the person that you believe is best.
