Going to the gym as a trans woman can be intimidating and scary at first. It can also pose safety concerns if you live in a conservative area. Staying safe as a transwoman is of utmost importance, and staying in shape is vital to being healthy. So, the question is, how to go to the gym as a MtF Trans woman and avoid possible confrontation.
Being able to change in peace, without feeling unsafe, or making others uncomfortable, is a topic worthy of discussion. If you pass, you might not be as concerned or worried about going to the gym, however if you don't pass yet, it might be more stressful and concerning.
If you are at the beginning of your transition, or further along in your journey, we've come up with a few tips that to help you feel comfortable going to the gym.
Tip #1 - Go to the Gym During the Day
If you are going to attend the gym, it's safest to go during the day, before dark. Try to choose a time when less people will be there working out. If possible mid mornings, and early afternoons are the best times when, when the gym is less crowded.
Tip #2 - Avoid the Lockers
One of the most important tips would be to dress at home and avoid the lockers if possible. If you arrive at the gym prepared for your workout, you skip the need to hit the lockers, and reduce the opportunity for confrontation or added interaction. After your workout is finished, dry off and head home for a shower and to change out of your gym clothes.
Tip #3 - Find a Gym with a Gender Neutral Locker
Nowadays, a lot of gyms offer a variety of options for transgender people to feel comfortable. Some of the options might include a gender neutral single stall restroom, or a single stall family changing room. These are both great options to have privacy, and avoid confrontation from other gymgoers.
Tip #4 - Don't Overdo your Makeup
Try to wear minimal makeup to the gym. Wear only enough to feel feminine. Don't go overboard and put on beauty queen levels of makeup when you're going to the gym. At the gym, to be stay safe, it is best to blend in and not stand out if you are transgender.
Tip #5 - Don't Go to the Gym on Weekends
If you want to be able to enjoy your workout in peace and avoid confrontation, don't go to the gym on weekends. Most gyms are busy and crowded on weekends, so there is a higher chance you will have to interact with people. If you are unsure about the best time to go to the gym, call and ask when are their slow times, and try to schedule going to the gym then.
Tip #6 - Workout at Home, or Gym in the Building
One of the best ways to workout if you are nervous of going to the gym is to simply workout in the comfort of your own home. Or, if your lucky to have a gym in your building, try working out there first.
